GPU-poor
1.Lacking the compute needed to be a serious player in frontier AI; the opposite of GPU-rich. A poverty measured not in dollars but in H100s.
We're GPU-poor and proud: we fine-tune on two 4090s in a closet in the Mission.
01Origin
Popularized by Dylan Patel and Daniel Nishball's August 2023 SemiAnalysis piece "Google Gemini Eats the World - Gemini Smashes GPT-4 By 5X, The GPU-Poors," which sorted the entire AI industry into GPU-rich (Google, OpenAI, a handful of others) and everyone else, scrapping for allocation.
The term stuck because it named the AI boom's actual class system. Valuation, headcount, and pedigree all became secondary to a single question - how much compute can you actually get - and "GPU-poor" gave the have-nots a flag to fly, half in grievance and half in pride: small models, clever training, doing more with less.
Its emotional opposite is the Jensen Huang catechism - nobody GPU-rich has ever woken up a loser.
