Karl the Fog
1.The San Francisco fog, as a character. Named Karl by a pseudonymous parody account in 2010; now it's just what the city calls the weather.
Karl ate the Marina again - the rooftop launch party is now a hallway launch party.
01Origin
In August 2010, an anonymous San Franciscan created @KarlTheFog, a parody account tweeting as the fog itself - rolling in dramatically, swallowing the Golden Gate, apologizing to no one. The name reportedly honors the giant Karl in the film Big Fish: a creature everyone feared would hurt them, who turned out to be gentle and just wanted to be around people.
The account amassed over 350,000 followers and the name escaped containment entirely: TV meteorologists say Karl, the merch exists, and an entire city refers to a weather pattern by first name. The account has since been deleted from X outright - every original post is a dead link, and the archive survives only in screenshots, articles, and the quotes below. A city that documents everything failed to back up its own weather. Imitator accounts have appeared to claim the name; the compendium does not recognize them.
Karl is the proto-SFism, admitted here as prior art: proof that long before the AI boom, San Francisco's defining reflex was already to take an ambient force it cannot control, give it a persona, and fall in love with it. Every entry in this compendium is downstream of that move. The Hayes Valley demo night moves indoors when Karl decides it does.
