Rando Twitch guy
1.The label for Emmett Shear during his roughly 72-hour tenure as OpenAI interim CEO; now general SF slang for any out-of-nowhere leadership appointment the internet refuses to recognize.
The board's pick for interim CEO? Total rando Twitch guy energy.
01Origin
Late on November 19, 2023, the OpenAI board named Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear interim CEO - the company's third CEO in three days. Mira Murati, texting Sam Altman as the news broke, summarized the appointment in five words: "New guy is rando Twitch guy."
The text became public in 2026 via the Musk v. Altman federal trial, and Shear leaned all the way in - changing his X banner to Murati's text and tweeting "It's an honor just to be nominated." Elon Musk replied with a fire emoji.
Far from a rando: Shear co-founded YC-backed Kiko in 2005, then Justin.tv, led its spinoff Twitch through a roughly $970M sale to Amazon, and later founded the AI-alignment startup Softmax. At the time he said Altman's removal had been "handled very badly" - see directionally very bad. The term survives because SF constantly produces situations where a fully credentialed outsider is parachuted into a crisis and processed by the timeline as a stranger.
