AI condom
1.A senior engineer placed between Claude and production so the company can call autonomous coding safe. The AI writes at light speed; you spend the afternoon checking whether it invented authentication.
The founder announced that Claude now ships features autonomously, then added me as the mandatory reviewer. Great, I got promoted to AI condom.
01Origin
The human-role metaphor broke out on X on July 29, 2026, when Kshitij posted, “Software engineers have become the condom between Claude Code and production.” The post drew roughly 7,000 likes and 497,000 views, then escaped into Instagram memes, reposts, and increasingly resigned variations about studying engineering just to stand between Claude and prod.
By August 2026, the line was appearing in Hacker News and programming subreddits as shorthand for the review burden created by agent-written code. A separate tool called cco, short for “Claude Condom,” had used the same protection joke for an agent sandbox earlier in 2026, but the job-description meaning appears to have been popularized by Kshitij’s post.
