Cracked

1.A startup engineer considered freakishly fast, technically sharp, and able to turn AI tools into headcount. Every seed founder needs one because hiring four normal people would damage the narrative.

At 2:13 a.m., the founder called the intern cracked after he shipped auth, broke billing, and opened a seventh Claude Code session to fix both.

01Origin

Cracked was gaming slang before founders put it in job descriptions. It became widely associated with Fortnite around 2019, meaning absurdly skilled or effectively overpowered, although an alternate etymology traces it to calling out a broken shield in Apex Legends. No individual coinage is established, and the explanation that someone plays like they are on crack is plausible folk etymology, not settled history.

The engineering version was clearly circulating by spring 2024. Alex Reibman called local-LLM hackers cracked engineers in April, and Safe Superintelligence announced a lean, cracked team in June, giving the phrase an unusually prominent Palo Alto endorsement. A Cracked Engineers job board appeared that October, Firecrawl used the phrase in hiring that December, and by 2025 it had become common enough in startup listings to inspire backlash memes. In 2026, The Information treated the cracked engineer as the AI era successor to the 10x engineer.
