01Origin
The venue opened in 2011 at 473 Broadway in North Beach, in the former Dragon Bar space, and runs a Friday institution called Battle of the Decades: well drinks start at one dollar and rise in price every hour. This is an incentive structure precision-engineered for people who can arrive at six on a Friday with nothing else scheduled, which is to say interns.
Every summer the intern class discovers it simultaneously, as if issued the address at orientation, and the Stanford contingent treats Broadway as a north campus annex. The dollar-drink clock is a forcing function for showing up early; the crowd it selects is one where a 24th birthday reads as seniority.
The age law is exact and self-enforcing. Nobody decides to stop going to Monroe's; one September it simply stops occurring to you, and that is how you learn you are 26. From there the pipeline runs north: Balboa is the bar you age into, Monroe's is the one you age out of, and the 7 girls of SF have, at any given moment, exactly one representative there, checking on the youth.
