1.Pasting a huge block of unreviewed AI output where one human sentence would do, then leaving. You look productive for ten minutes; someone else spends the afternoon defusing it.
The PM asked if the migration was risky, and forty seconds later a 2,000-word essay with seven headers landed in the channel. "Slop grenade," someone typed. "Take cover."
01Origin
The documented origin is noslopgrenade.com, an anonymous single-page manifesto circulating by May 21, 2026, whose entire argument is "Stop throwing AI-generated walls of text into conversations." Its demo case is a coworker who answers "Should we use Redis or Memcached?" with a two-thousand-word nuanced-decision essay nobody asked for. The page made the rounds on Hacker News the same week, and the term stuck because everyone reading it had already been hit.
In September 2026 Shane Parrish credited the coinage to Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, which is how attribution works in tech: the phrase existed for four months, and then the nearest CEO acquired it. No public Lütke post containing the phrase has ever been found. So the anonymous coiner watched their term get repackaged under a bigger byline and passed along unchecked, an irony the entry is contractually obligated to point out.
