The Arena

1.A tech nickname for the AI startup corridor spanning parts of SoMa, the Mission District, and Potrero Hill in San Francisco. The area contains a dense concentration of AI companies, researchers, engineers, founders, events, and workspaces.

Their robotics startup moved into the Arena so the team could be closer to other AI builders and events.

01Origin

Shawn “swyx” Wang introduced or first widely publicized the name in September 2023 with an X post describing the SoMa-Mission-Potrero district as “The Arena” because AI engineers and researchers were actively building there. Wang later said directly that he named the Arena, making him the strongest documented claimant to coinage.

Mission Local documented the term in October 2023, followed that month by The Washington Post. The New York Times gave it broader visibility in August 2025, after which the label also appeared in AI-industry writing and commercial real-estate maps.
