Feel the AGI
1.The OpenAI rallying cry turned all-purpose SF exclamation for the moment a model does something that rearranges your sense of what's coming. Part chant, part diagnosis, part recruiting pitch.
New model one-shotted the codebase migration. Feeling the AGI. Going for a walk.
01Origin
Inside OpenAI it was literal: chief scientist Ilya Sutskever reportedly led meetings with the chant "Feel the AGI! Feel the AGI!", per The Atlantic's reporting on the company's internal culture. He took it public in a 2022 post, "If you feel the AGI / Apply to OpenAI", which he noted was posted against the advice of wiser colleagues. Sam Altman later canonized the softer form: "feeling the AGI today 🩵".
On the timeline it now marks the recurring civic ritual of San Francisco: a model release drops, someone pastes a result that should not be possible, and the replies fill with people feeling the AGI. It is the emotional counterpart of a benchmark: unfalsifiable, contagious, and renewed quarterly.
The phrase does double duty as critique. Detractors use it for the industry's religious register, the sense that AGI is felt before it is defined; believers use it because that is exactly what it feels like. Both camps are describing the same sensation. The fully claude pilled feel it daily, the GPU-poor feel it secondhand, and clanker is what you call the thing while feeling it.
