1.The opposite of looksmaxing: deliberately looking as bad as possible (Uggs, hoodie, the 11th-grade haircut) so zero time goes into your appearance and all of it goes into the startup. Not letting go. Locking in. Strictly temporary: you uggmaxx until the milestone, then re-enter society.

01Origin

Coined by Mehul Agarwal, a San Francisco founder (CEO of Koyal, an agentic AI filmmaking startup), in a June 2026 post on X. The lore: as the new kid in 11th grade he got a haircut before a school trip to make an impression, the barber destroyed him, and he spent the year looking the worst he ever has. The coinage was the announcement that he was going back to that haircut on purpose: "It's time to ugg-maxx."

The point is routinely misread: uggmaxxing is not letting yourself go, it is a discipline. The looksmaxer spends the morning optimizing a jawline; the uggmaxxer deliberately returns to his worst-looking era, deletes the entire beauty pipeline from the schedule, and redirects the reclaimed hours into shipping. Peak ugly as proof of peak focus. It is lock-in, dressed for lock-in.

The "-maxxing" suffix it inverts has a long lineage: born in gaming's min-maxing, adopted by 2010s looksmaxxing communities, and mainstreamed via TikTok in the 2020s, spawning endless variants (smellmaxxing, booksmaxxing). Uggmaxxing turns the whole apparatus on its head - the SF founder's answer to an optimization culture that never asked whether the objective function was signed correctly.

Crucially, uggmaxxing is a phase, not a lifestyle. It has an exit condition: the launch, the raise, the milestone, after which the haircut is repaired and the uggmaxxer re-enters society, transformed and suspiciously well-rested. The coiner himself documented the arc on X, closing the loop on his own lore. You do not uggmaxx forever; you uggmaxx until. And what comes after has a name too: demon time 😈.

I looked the worst I've ever looked in my life in 11th grade. Today I'm going back to that haircut. It's time to ugg-maxx. Backstory: new kid, school trip coming, so I got a haircut to make an impression. The barber fked my shit up. Looking in the mirror I knew two things: 1. No girl would ever find me attractive in that state (not that they otherwise would lol). 2. Only my personality could save me. It was the most confident I've ever been in my life. This summer, it's all hot girl summer and looksmaxxing, pushing an unrealistic standard that just makes people insecure. So I got a buzzcut (barber confirmed thrice). I decided to uggmaxx. Now you're thinking, this is stupid, what does hair have to do with anything? If you've watched Fleabag, you know: Hair is everything. We wish it wasn't so we could think about something else occasionally, but it is. (Not anti-bald, love my bald brethren.) Uggmaxxing isn't about being unkempt or giving up on yourself. It's about locking in. No distractions, no worrying about looking attractive or impressing anyone. Let only your personality shine. Hit the gym, eat clean, build your startup. My employees at @koyalai call it military mode. To go from 0 to 100, you first have to go to 0. This is 0. This is the before pic to frame next to your after. Looksmaxxing and @looksmaxxvc are stupid, and yes, so is this. But it's high time there was a counter-culture to the nonsense tiktokers peddle. Not a PSA but It's so good to know anyone you find attractive most likely won't reciprocate it (not that they did before, but you get my point). So if you're dumb like me, lock in and ugg-maxx this summer. (Side effect: you'll probably stay single until your hair grows back.)

A month ago, I buzzed my hair to purposefully look ugly. Now it’s grown back. Here are my learnings from Uggmaxxing: - I stopped being “scared of pretty girls and starting conversations” (ifykyk). I flirted more easily (& respectfully) because I knew they’d never fall for me in my current state lol - As a brown man, I finally felt represented because I looked like Mbappe, the footballer. - I became insanely confident. Every conversation started with: “sorry, don’t mind that I look like a hard boiled egg, I’m Uggmaxxing.” - I started going to the gym. It’s one thing to be bald. You can’t be bald and unfit. - I cared less about how I looked and more about how I dressed. Still sweatpants, but maybe a cardigan or turtleneck on top. I call it “potentially homeless billionaire.” WAS IT WORTH IT? Yes. There was no demand, so I cut off supply and focused on myself. I also got the best “before” pictures possible. WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? Not anytime soon. I was tempted, but as my intern said: are you really Ugg MAXXing if you do it again? WHAT’S NEXT? I’m more confident, got my product built, and my hair is back. It’s over for the rest. It’s time for Demon time 😈
