1.A derogatory Bay Area dating term for a woman rated a four out of ten who supposedly acts like a nine; a pun on the football team. Coined and circulated by men who rated themselves nines with, historically, equal accuracy.

01Origin
The pun surfaced on Urban Dictionary around 2010 and circulated quietly in Bay Area dating discourse: fours acting like nines, named for the team. Its documentation is thin because its natural habitat is the kind of group chat that does not publish.
Its canonical public moment came in 2013, when a startup founder's Medium rant about San Francisco included the term among his complaints about the city's women. The response was immediate and civic: mockery across every platform, actual billboards taunting him by name, and an apology tour. The term is therefore best documented not by its users but by the backlash, which is the most San Francisco fate available to a piece of slang: the diss got dissed harder.
The compendium files it as contested and notes the obvious: a rating system invented by men who never imagined the scale pointing back at them is not analysis, it is anti signal with arithmetic.
