01Origin
The underlying idea is old and legitimate. Francis Edgeworth described multicriteria optima in 1881, Vilfredo Pareto developed the economic concept around 1906, and “Pareto optimum” appeared in economics by 1950 before spreading through operations research and engineering. “Pareto efficient” and “Pareto optimal” are established terms, not recent linguistic mutations. AI did not discover the phrase in 2023. OpenAI’s WebGPT paper used it in 2021, and pre-2023 machine-learning work routinely discussed Pareto frontiers for accuracy, cost, fairness, latency, and compute. What changed during the 2025 and 2026 model-eval boom was the audience: GEPA put Pareto selection inside prompt optimization, founders applied it to model routing, and by 2026 Jeff Dean could appear on a podcast titled “Owning the AI Pareto Frontier.” The term had escaped the methods section and reached the founder dinner.
