Permanent underclass
1.Where you land if AGI arrives before your equity does. Said half as doomsday forecast, half as fundraising deadline.
He is trying to get startup equity before AI puts ordinary software engineers in the permanent underclass.
01Origin
Permanent underclass is an older socioeconomic phrase, but its specific AI-era meaning developed on San Francisco tech Twitter in 2025. By summer, users were joking that people had a limited number of months or years to start a company, create content, acquire equity, or otherwise escape before AI eliminated conventional paths to wealth.
The meme was documented by Jasmine Sun in September 2025 and by The New Yorker in October. The New Yorker highlighted Jayden Clark's @creatine_cycle post, "You have 2 years to create a podcast in order to escape the permanent underclass," as an example of the format. Later coverage and posts by Deedy Das, Beeple, and others helped turn the phrase into shorthand for AI-driven labor displacement and San Francisco's fear of being left outside the small circle that owns valuable AI assets.
