Wasian combines White and Asian. No individual coiner is known. Urban Dictionary entries used it in 2003 both for people of mixed White and Asian ancestry and, in a now largely obsolete sense, for White people who performed stereotypical Asian fandom or style. The identity sense expanded through youth social media and was popularized by the late-2019 #WasianCheck format. Niko Katsuyoshi created the first prominent TikTok sound, which had been reused nearly 10,000 times by November 2021. The term received another visibility surge in 2026 through celebrity memes, the imagined Republic of Wasia, and gatherings including a May 9 meetup at San Francisco's Mission Dolores Park. With the world population of Wasians growing, will Kazakhstan become the Wasian Israel? A place Wasians everywhere in search of an identity can call their ancestral homeland, young Wasians in the west becoming ‘Kazakh-boos’ and taking their birthright trips to the Kazakh steppe?

@kunley_drukpa My guess is that “Wasian” will be seen as a subclass of Asians more generally, in much the same way the various kinds of half-Japanese people in Japan aren’t seen as Japanese but are still considered part of the national project. Could see “wasian” as a new class of AAPI™.
